Ephesians 2: 6-10 – “ And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – NLT
I was recently gleaning through the lectionary texts of Scripture for the month of August. I happened to notice a pattern. There were a lot of texts from the book of Ephesians. As I read through these texts and began to indulge in their meaning, a thread seemed to emerge. These are texts that are attempting to teach the church in Ephesus how to increase their personal relationship with God. These texts are in a sense, tools for building our faith.
We often look at a person’s life and think of them as quite the spiritual person. They are involved in study and are always at worship. They seem to have the answers to life questions and often contemplate those with us and help us along the way. How did that person get there, we ask? It is not an easy road. There are lessons to be learned by reading about how other churches and their people engaged in their faith, relied on God, and attempted to increase their knowledge while making themselves a living example of what God can do. We were created for this, by faith, not by our works.
For the month of August I encourage you to take plenty of notes, refer back to the Scriptures, and challenge yourself to engage with God on a deeper level. We take the time to make a list of chores that need to be done, whether on paper or in our head, and it helps us to get them done. Our life of faith is not different. I will be praying for you in the days and weeks to come!
